Artist, poet, and novelist Barbara Chase-Riboud discusses her new memoir, I Always Knew, with Deborah Willis, University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU) and Director of NYU’s Center for Black Visual Culture at the Institute of African American Affairs. I Always Knew is an intimate and vivid portrait of Chase-Riboud’s life told through the letters she wrote to her mother, Vivian Mae, between 1957 and 1991. In candid detail, Chase-Riboud tells her mother about her life in Europe, her work as an artist, her romances, and her journeys around the world.
